Discovered by the Wilkes Expedition in 1841, the town was named by Commander Wilkes, who dispatched a small boat (or "gig") to survey the area. Much of its history has been connected to boat building and fishing. An ideal destination for the boater, Gig Harbor offers excellent anchorage and 24 hour moorage at the public dock and nearby marinas

Today:
Only 45 minutes away from Sea-Tac International Airport and less than an hour from Seattle (or shorter by ferry crossing), Gig Harbor boasts a myriad of activities. Including salmon bakes, local theatre, a Summer Bluegrass Festival, Festival of the Arts, Autumn Apple Squeezing and a lighted boat parade at Christmas. Also known for its assortment of unique shops, restaurants and art galleries, the village is an exceptional weekend getaway destination. Three State parks are within a few miles of Gig Harbor where residents can enjoy fishing, boating, camping and recreation in abundance.

The Gig Harbor Peninsula School District is ranked the highest in Pierce County, providing many athletic and extra curricular activities for children. Other important Gig Harbor area features include; complete medical facilities for urgent care and same day surgery, the Tacoma Narrows Airport and three new, full-service, lodging facilities. A nice variety of Bed and Breakfast inns are available as well as fine dining with views, several golf courses and a public driving range.
